How to Quit 9-5 Like a New Expert

5 steps on how to quit 9-5 and become your own boss!

The story goes like this. I was just an ordinary girl with a pocket full of dreams. By the time I was 24, I’ve changed around thirty jobs, always unsatisfied either with salary or bosses, conditions, my surroundings. I was simply deeply unhappy with my occupations that were occupying my days and besides, leaving me tired and mad at the whole world right before my time to sleep. It was obvious, I desperately needed a change.

STOP DOING SOULLESS JOBS INSTEAD OF ONES YOU LOVE

At first, I was just daydreaming at my work. I was still doing my job perfectly, but I wasn’t present there at all. Quite often, I would find myself doing repetitive things like a robot and that would drive me crazy. I hated soulless acts and I still do. Most of my jobs were soulless, without any greater goal or purpose.

I did most of my jobs just to pay my bills like the majority of people. Besides, many of those jobs were not in my field of interest at all. Quite often, my field of interest was only my rent, food, hunger for survival. As time was passing, I was feeling more and more unsatisfied with the world I was living in which led to mixed anxiety and depression.

Soon after I realized to be happy, I need to do what makes me happy. Intending to love what I do, I need to do what I love. With this in mind, I started a journey that led me to a place where I am now — happy and satisfied with what I do. Therefore, I decided to share with you all my experience in 5 simple steps which are as follows.

1. MAKE A CHANGE

To start with a long journey called “the Change”, I replaced my known surroundings and I moved abroad.

However, you don’t have to take such an extreme step as I did. Instead, you can cut or color your hair, change an apartment, start taking yoga classes. Basically, you have to try something new. It has to be something different than the daily life you’ve had so far.

New things are spicing up your life and opening up a new perception window that has been close inside of your brain. Most people are afraid of change but actually, they are afraid of failure and leaving the safety patterns of their comfort zone. The truth is — you might fail and no one can guarantee you won’t fail. I failed too. But the most important thing is to get up and move on. Perhaps, just change the way of your thinking and give direction to your actions. Nobody can offer you a guarantee that you will succeed similarly nobody can decide that you will fail. Who Dares Wins!

2. CHANGE COMES WITHIN

Keep in mind that in order to start with the change, you truly have to want the change.

Instead of saying: “I will change it” or “I will do it”, say: “I can change it” and “I can do it.” It may appear to you that these sentences are the same or similar, but in fact, they are quite different. “I will” is not even close to your goal and “I can” already started running towards your goal. Our brains are extraordinary and most of the time they do what we say them to do. Focus more on yourself, meditate, and explore your own inner paths. Be your own best friend!

3. TRAIN YOUR CONFIDENCE

After training your brain, you have to train your inner being.

You have to become mentally stronger and learn how to say “yes” and “no”. You have to want everything you choose and choose everything you want. That’s the whole purpose of building a stronger persona from yourself. You don’t have to believe you are physically attractive or things of that sort, but you have to believe you are mentally attractive and strong enough to trust your attentions and acts which hopefully, will guide you to your ultimate goal.

4. MAKE A PLAN

This step is the most essential.

I advise you to think deeply about your wishes, your skills, and your goals. A great thing to do is also acknowledge your plans: if plan A doesn’t succeed, can you lean on plan B or C? The easiest way to succeed is to point yourself in the direction where you’re already good at. Think about the skills that you already have, what skills you want to achieve in the future, and on what you will be investing your time learning.

Try to make a visual board — that helps a lot in understanding your future goals and wishes plus it is a great daily push forward. If you ask me, I would never quit my job without a plan for the future. Let’s face it — we got to make for a living, we got to eat something. However, many people might be able to quit their jobs easily and get around until they find some other way of making an income but the truth is — quitting a current job without any plan whatsoever leads to stress, panic and most often you end up in a dark hole of depression.

5. ORGANIZE YOUR TIME

People usually stuck while scrolling on social media, watching funny videos, and so on.

And while it’s totally fine to give yourself a break from time to time, it’s not efficient or productive to waste a lot of time on things that don’t matter if you already decided to reach a certain goal. Whatever that goal might be, you have to make a schedule. It doesn’t need to be strict, but it helps if you decide on what to do next on your night before.

Think about how you want to spend your morning, what you need to do or what do you want to do in the afternoon, and how your night will look like. From my experience, I realized I’m able to accomplish many more things during the day if I just plan the day on my night before. I also have a notebook with a calendar in it where I write my obligations and other important notes. In this way, you will allow yourself to work and educate yourself in efficient ways plus you will have some time for relaxation and your hobbies. Time-wise!

To conclude, being a freelancer or “own boss” is not easy especially in the beginning. A certain dose of uncertainty with getting a monthly income is what you get by choosing this way of working. On the contrary, it definitely gives you a sort of freedom and a large dose of creativity too.

The biggest advice that I can give to you if you turn down into a freelancing world is:

Study hard, work enough, and relax a lot!
