How to Quit 9-5 Like a New Expert

5 steps on how to quit 9-5 and become your own boss!

The story goes like this. I was just an ordinary girl with a pocket full of dreams. By the time I was 24, I’ve changed around thirty jobs, always unsatisfied either with salary or bosses, conditions, my surroundings. I was simply deeply unhappy with my occupations that were occupying my days and besides, leaving me tired and mad at the whole world right before my time to sleep. It was obvious, I desperately needed a change.

STOP DOING SOULLESS JOBS INSTEAD OF ONES YOU LOVE

At first, I was just daydreaming at my work. I was still doing my job perfectly, but I wasn’t present there at all. Quite often, I would find myself doing repetitive things like a robot and that would drive me crazy. I hated soulless acts and I still do. Most of my jobs were soulless, without any greater goal or purpose.

I did most of my jobs just to pay my bills like the majority of people. Besides, many of those jobs were not in my field of interest at all. Quite often, my field of interest was only my rent, food, hunger for survival. As time was passing, I was feeling more and more unsatisfied with the world I was living in which led to mixed anxiety and depression.

Soon after I realized to be happy, I need to do what makes me happy. Intending to love what I do, I need to do what I love. With this in mind, I started a journey that led me to a place where I am now — happy and satisfied with what I do. Therefore, I decided to share with you all my experience in 5 simple steps which are as follows.

1. MAKE A CHANGE

To start with a long journey called “the Change”, I replaced my known surroundings and I moved abroad.

However, you don’t have to take such an extreme step as I did. Instead, you can cut or color your hair, change an apartment, start taking yoga classes. Basically, you have to try something new. It has to be something different than the daily life you’ve had so far.

New things are spicing up your life and opening up a new perception window that has been close inside of your brain. Most people are afraid of change but actually, they are afraid of failure and leaving the safety patterns of their comfort zone. The truth is — you might fail and no one can guarantee you won’t fail. I failed too. But the most important thing is to get up and move on. Perhaps, just change the way of your thinking and give direction to your actions. Nobody can offer you a guarantee that you will succeed similarly nobody can decide that you will fail. Who Dares Wins!

2. CHANGE COMES WITHIN

Keep in mind that in order to start with the change, you truly have to want the change.

Instead of saying: “I will change it” or “I will do it”, say: “I can change it” and “I can do it.” It may appear to you that these sentences are the same or similar, but in fact, they are quite different. “I will” is not even close to your goal and “I can” already started running towards your goal. Our brains are extraordinary and most of the time they do what we say them to do. Focus more on yourself, meditate, and explore your own inner paths. Be your own best friend!

3. TRAIN YOUR CONFIDENCE

After training your brain, you have to train your inner being.

You have to become mentally stronger and learn how to say “yes” and “no”. You have to want everything you choose and choose everything you want. That’s the whole purpose of building a stronger persona from yourself. You don’t have to believe you are physically attractive or things of that sort, but you have to believe you are mentally attractive and strong enough to trust your attentions and acts which hopefully, will guide you to your ultimate goal.

4. MAKE A PLAN

This step is the most essential.

I advise you to think deeply about your wishes, your skills, and your goals. A great thing to do is also acknowledge your plans: if plan A doesn’t succeed, can you lean on plan B or C? The easiest way to succeed is to point yourself in the direction where you’re already good at. Think about the skills that you already have, what skills you want to achieve in the future, and on what you will be investing your time learning.

Try to make a visual board — that helps a lot in understanding your future goals and wishes plus it is a great daily push forward. If you ask me, I would never quit my job without a plan for the future. Let’s face it — we got to make for a living, we got to eat something. However, many people might be able to quit their jobs easily and get around until they find some other way of making an income but the truth is — quitting a current job without any plan whatsoever leads to stress, panic and most often you end up in a dark hole of depression.

5. ORGANIZE YOUR TIME

People usually stuck while scrolling on social media, watching funny videos, and so on.

And while it’s totally fine to give yourself a break from time to time, it’s not efficient or productive to waste a lot of time on things that don’t matter if you already decided to reach a certain goal. Whatever that goal might be, you have to make a schedule. It doesn’t need to be strict, but it helps if you decide on what to do next on your night before.

Think about how you want to spend your morning, what you need to do or what do you want to do in the afternoon, and how your night will look like. From my experience, I realized I’m able to accomplish many more things during the day if I just plan the day on my night before. I also have a notebook with a calendar in it where I write my obligations and other important notes. In this way, you will allow yourself to work and educate yourself in efficient ways plus you will have some time for relaxation and your hobbies. Time-wise!

To conclude, being a freelancer or “own boss” is not easy especially in the beginning. A certain dose of uncertainty with getting a monthly income is what you get by choosing this way of working. On the contrary, it definitely gives you a sort of freedom and a large dose of creativity too.

The biggest advice that I can give to you if you turn down into a freelancing world is:

Study hard, work enough, and relax a lot!

Find out how I became BRAVE and defeated my fear of heights! 🙂

Are you a freelancer or not? If yes, what is your piece of advice to become a successful freelancer?

Or you just fancy free things and you decided to sneak peak on to my suggestions?

This is my complete guide to all the ways of entertainment I use in 2020 during global pandemic situation.

So if you want to get GREAT ideas today, you’ll love my new post!

Let’s dive right in.

READING FILLS YOUR MIND AND RESTS YOUR SOUL

Did you know that only six minutes of reading can reduce your stress by up to 68%? (More about the research, you can read HERE.)

Not to mention how reading widens your perspective in general and teaches you about large range of things.

I have to say I am a huge reader, but since I was travelling a lot and moving too, carrying all those books started to be heavy and quite expensive for me.

Yes, I love to touch, smell and feel the books, especially old ones, but I realized I have to be in step with the time in order to make my life easier.

As a matter of fact, reading was never easier than today. Apart from eBooks, which you can read on devices that are less harmful for your eyes such as Kindle or any of the cheaper alternatives, there are plenty of audio books too! 🙂 (I got totally hooked up to audio books!)

Below I will share with you all the free sources where you can get your new and awesome content to read.

1.) WHERE TO FIND FREE AUDIO BOOKS?

  • AudioBooks is a great site where you can choose 3 free audiobooks within your free trial
  • YOUTUBE CHANNELS are awesome source of free audio books, check GREATEST AUDIO BOOKS CHANNEL plus, you can have YouTube premium for the whole month!

2.) WHERE TO FIND FREE EBOOKS IN PDF?

3.) WHERE TO FIND BOTH AUDIO BOOKS AND FREE BOOKS WITH 30 DAYS FREE?

  • SCRIBD is an awesome site with 1 million books and audio books !

4.) APPLICATION FOR FOR MOBILE PHONES WITH 7 DAYS FREE READING

  • BOOKMATE is a great, mobile friendly app that has over thousand books in 13 languages!

BOOK SUGGESTIONS:

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC has recently published an article with 10 books that can take you on a real-life adventures from your couch!

MY TOP SUGGESTIONS:

  • Life of Pi, Martel Yann
  • Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, Yuval Noah Harari,
  • Mind Hacks, Matt Webb and Tom Stafford
  • Delivering Happiness, Jonathon Haidt
  • The Celestine Prophecy, James Redfield
  • The Secret, Rhonda Byrne
  • Trainspotting, Irwine Welsh
  • P.S. I Love You, Holly Kennedy
  • The Reader, Bernhard Schlink
  • Lost Connections, Johann Hari
  • Proof of Heaven, Eben Alexander
Vladimir Jokanovic book: made in Yugoslavia
This book is not very well made, but I love the headline and I’ve found it in the streets of Amsterdam! (It’s on Dutch)

CREATIVITY IS INTELLIGENCE HAVING FUN

I can understand that some people are less creative, while some people are more creative.

However, we are all born as creative souls.

So, spark your creativity!

Wake up your inner creator and transform your imaginations, dreams and ideas into reality of any form!

There are endless ways of creating and some of them are: painting, making DIY things from plastic bottles or paper like origami, drawing, writing, building furniture from used or broken material etc.

If you are seriously out of ideas, think of problem-solving things that can help you in your daily life or your household, kitchen, garage…

Then, move on to planning and realizing that idea.

If you are still stuck, well, read on to explore my free sources from where you can gain some inspiration!

1.) Check MY PINTEREST boards to see what inspires me! (especially boards called “Creativity” and “Plastic Free”).

Pinterest is a platform of dozens creative ideas so explore more terms to extend your imagination.

I was a bit creative with shells and photo frame

2.) Check some awesome sites like icreativeideas that are providing hacks and tons of creative things

3.) Subscribe to magazines and portals on topics that interest you

4.) Watch documentaries and other interesting on-screen shows

See ➙ an article with the list of movies that will transport you around the world.

5.) Let yourself be bored!

To be frank, I don’t like being bored and only time I experience boredom is, surprisingly, when I’m in a boring company, not when I’m alone.

On the other hand, I learned to let myself be bored from time to time.

Why? Well, by being bored, you are allowing your brain to work in different ways.

Our brains are in constant need of solving problems and finding solutions. While beings bored, your brain desperately seeks stimulation and that is leading to some fresh new ideas.

Don’t forget, we are not only creative beings but curious beings too.

PICKING UP A NEW SKILL CREATES A WHOLE NEW & DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE IN YOUR BRAIN

1.) Practice a foreign language.

Great apps for learning languages are:

  • Rosetta Stone (3 days free, my favourite with the biggest focus on pronouncing the words)
  • Duolingo is a great app and website with quiz like questions and exercises to learn foreign language (totally free) or Duolingo Plus with some more features and extensive learning (7 days free).
  • Omniglot
  • edX
  • Memirise great app and website to learn the language with sounds and pictures
  • Spanish school based in Bogotá, Colombia if you want to brush up your Spanish, here’s a quality school that will help you learn the language with intensive, but never boring class (on Friday you can get your 3 h of free Spanish lesson and see if you like!)

BONUS TIP: Watch movies in other languages to practice new language better especially cartoons! I am watching daily here in Catalonia: “The Simpsons” and Homer helps me to learn Spanish with his Spanish accent. 🙂

2.) Learn how to play a music instrument

YouTube is a great source for learning music instruments.

3.) Try cooking a new cuisine

TasteAtlas is a great cooking site and a creative community where you can daily seek for new traditional dishes (7783 on this site). You can even make your own profile and share your own dishes, reviews and ideas.

4.) Learn how to play a sport or a game that you have never played before

5.) Watch podcasts as they are great source of knowledge especially if guests are some influential persons and scientists (one of my favourite is “The Joe Rogan Ecperience” and “TED“)

6.) Discover an inner artist in you and try to learn how to paint or draw! (we all know Bob Ross, don’t we?)

🇬🇧▪︎RED OR ORANGE SAND❓▪︎ _ The Red Sand Beach is named after the reddish rocks of the region. 🚩 In this photo gallery you can see, even up close, that the sand is more bright and dark orange than red, though the surrounding rocks are indeed red.🤷‍♀️ . However, compared to the other beaches in Crete, this is truly the reddest sand on this island❗ We also assume that it becomes more red depending on the time of day and the suns rays. 🌞 . In any case, the sand is extremely pleasing to the eye and doesn't scratch the body like sand in some beaches of the world. 🤲👌 It is also of a very fine structure, various shapes can be easily made and remain in that shape for quite some time. 🧿🚭🚱 __________________________________________________🇭🇷▪︎CRVENI ILI NARANČASTI PIJESAK❓▪︎ _ Plaža Crveni pijesak dobila je ime po crvenkastim stijenama regije. 🚩 . 🤲👌 Također je vrlo fine strukture, lako se mogu napraviti različiti oblici i zadržati u tom obliku još dugo vremena.🧿🚭🚱 ___________________________________________________ #crete #discover_greece_ #amazing_crete #exploreobserveshare #picoftheday #travelpassport #travelcrete #greece #visitgreece #ig_greece #best_beaches #travelingpost #travelgreece #greek_islands #visitcrete #creteisland #creta #cretegreece #CRETE #redsand #matala #thebestplacestovisitgreece #instatravel #colours_of_crete #welovecrete #greece_travel #seascape #bestbeaches #besteuropepics #sandbeaches &#sandbeach &#nudistbeaches &#travelbloggers

RENEWING OLD FRIENDSHIPS AND CONNECTIONS CAN IMPROVE YOUR WELL BEING

To be frank, I made this one up! 🙂
But, if you think outside the box, this applies to above mentioned how experiencing a new environment awakens new ideas and perspectives.

Well, the same is with new people.

So tell me, how is that not good for your well being!?

1.) Use advantages of internet and reach on to some people for which you haven’t had the time before or simply make new friendships while being active on social networks and online communities. Interact and share ideas!

2.) Have a video calls with your siblings or friends via Zoom, Skype, Messenger, WhatsUp…

IN A HEALTHY BODY, THERE’S A HEALTHY SPIRIT

I know we all got a bit lazy in this pandemic time of lockdown but we should not forget we are actually designed to be regularly active! (here you can read more about the importance of exercising)

Of course, resting is a part of exercising too. I am not a professional, but I do exercise daily for my whole life. The best time to start exercising (at least for me) is morning, and splitting that into few sessions, so you can properly rest your muscles and avoid any unpleasant inflammations.

If you don’t have any idea how to exercise or what to do, below I will share with you some great sources that will hopefully inspire you to move! “I like to move it, move it!” 🙂

I am training even when I’m on a beach during my holiday.

1.) DO A YOGA with DOWN DOG app (from beginners to advanced)

2.) Again YOUTUBE has dozens resources of videos with exercising tutorials, dance tutorials, meditation tutorials that can help you feel better immediately!

BOHO BEAUTIFUL is a very quality channel for great Yoga and Pilates home workouts.

ADRIENE MISHLER is another YouTube yogi channel where you can practice yoga.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE KIDS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A NEW LIFE ON THIS PLANET, YOU CAN PLANT A NEW PLANT !

Don’t get me wrong. I am not against having children, but opposite-I am always for creating new forms of life!

If you are not able to buy or order seeds-REGROW!

Every fruit or vegetable that has seeds, can be easily regrow. The same is valid for herbs and many more foods. I always draw inspiration from YouTube. (sorry for mentioning it so many times but seriously, it’s an awesome source especially of “How To…” kind of videos.)

🇬🇧▪︎REVENGE FOR AMAZON!!!▪︎ A human inhales about 740kg of oxygen a year which is about seven or eight trees a year planted per person to participate and contribute to their annual oxygen supply: All I see about #Amazon are dark news, thoughts & funniest: pray for Amazon!? Religion aside, dear people that isn't an action, these are just words! . I decided to try to make people fully aware of the situation we are in and to show that, even we have no money and are far from #Brasil, we can greatly help the current & future situation of the #planet we are living on. Without paying money to any associations, with 0 money! All you need is what you already probably have: An apple, a lemon, a grapefruit, an orange-ANY FRUIT THAT HAS SEEDS. Just pay attention that the area where you want to plant it suits the fruit so it could grow as faster as possible. It will probably take a min of 2-3 years, I plan to do this each time I by seed fruits, which is every week. My goal is to plant this fall at least 50 trees. Imagine if each one of us does this? We could have area as big as Amazon back in the upcoming 5 years. So my example are apples: you cut them (best organic ones) and take care you don't damage the seeds. Take them out. Leave the seeds in the glass of water 5-6 h to soak and throw the seeds that float to the surface (they won't germinate). Leave a bit of water in the glass. Take a paper towel and fold it to make a "bed" into a plastic/glass cointainer with the lid. (Doesn't need to be big). Place the seeds carefully not touching with your fingers & fold the paper over it pouring it with the bit of remaining water. Paper should be moist, not drowning in the water. Drain excess water by tilting the lid. Close the lid and put it in the refrigerator (vegetable section, if u have) for 10-30 days. You can check them occasionally to see if the paper is moisted. After they sprout (1 to 1.5 cm length) they are ready to be planted. Directly in the ground outside or in a small pot first. I will keep you updated how my seeds are going. DON'T WAIT FOR A CHANGE, BE THE CHANGE! 🌎 _____________________________________________________ #MyNewPlantedTree#amazonas #Amazonia#amazon

GOOD, OLD BOARD GAMES ARE CONNECTING MORE THAN ANY INTERNET CONNECTION

If your family consists of more than 2 persons, you can switch back to board games!

Monopoly, Scrabble, Chess, Risk, Clue, Uno, Pictionary, Guess Who?, Dominos are only few of the most popular board games of all time! See 76 Best Board Games of All Time.

However, you don’t need to have any of those. You can be creative and make your own game by yourself or play some of those “words games” like “Caladont”.

HOW TO REMAIN CALM DURING GLOBAL PANDEMIC TIME

Encouraged by current world events, I decided to write an inspirational post about our main emotion:

FEAR

Let’s be frank. Fear is good. Don’t you feel the same?

I mean, if we haven’t had a fear, we would have much higher chances of dying, right!?

Some of us would be unstoppable in extreme sports. Some of us would go much deeper into discovering dangerous hidden places and enormous, risky natural wonders. Some of us would maybe take much higher risks in our businesses and lives in general. We wouldn’t be able to resonate much dangerous environment from a safe one.

To put it another way, fear is an emotion that wakes up adrenaline flowing in our vessels and at the same time it leaves us feeling somehow uncomfortable in our own skin.

Fear causes physiological and behavior changes and it’s proven scientifically that every kind of fear we feel is closely connected to death.

In other words, we are all afraid of dying of some kind.

As I am a huge Michael Stevens fan, in his Mind Field series about fear, it is researched and revealed how humans actually share one fear which is:

“elevation of carbon dioxide in the blood caused by an uncontrollable external threat.”

To give you an example, that can be suffocating under extreme conditions such as drowning. To give an illustration of what I mean, have a look at Michael’s episode as well as all the other previous episodes especially if you are bit nerdy for facts and knowledge like I am. 🙂

Note: Some Michael’s sayings I included in this article.

But…why am I writing about this at all? Well…I guess you all know the answer:

GLOBAL PANDEMIC SITUATION THAT WE ARE CURRENLTY IN

Corona virus successfully made the whole planet feel anxious, terrified, worried…which is in fact, expected.

“Fear is an innate aversion. Our ancestors have survived long enough and avoided danger to reproduce and to make creatures likes us. We are organisms that instinctively avoid and averse to potentially dangerous sensations. Sensations such as pain, or being sick….”

As I already mentioned, death is a center of all of our webs of fear. Survival. It’s why we are here.

“Our brain is kind of a prediction processor. We always try to predict what is going to happen next. So anything that comes and it doesn’t match our templates or sense categories, we start to be cognitively and emotionally aroused.”

This leads to activation both of our amygdalas (“fear center” of the brain) and it makes us little suspicious or at least puts us on our toes again. Two Amygdalas are telling us what should we remember, what should we learn upon our survival.

That is why we are so much afraid of corona virus.

To put it differently, we are not afraid of corona virus or economic crisis; we are afraid of dying. We are afraid of suffocating.

However, even if things are not working out right now well for nobody, we shouldn’t be desperate.

“Remember, the world has been in much worse situations. Humanity was suffering lot more before than right now. Much of the horror the world went through.

Find comfort and strength in a fact that you are the result of thousands years of struggle for the human race to build, sustain and, if need to be, to rebuild its civilization, its unstoppable quest to improve living conditions.

It is obvious that today we are living in the most prosperous and safest moment in history.
It’s not the end of the world.

It’s not the end of civilization either. This is the current realization that we all need to understand.

As early as the Bronze Age, almost all civilizations were wiped out. Still, no one has any idea how. Droughts, revolutions, wars, diseases…..maybe all together.
When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, many thought that civilization had disappeared irreversibly. But it survived in the Eastern Empire and rebuilt very quickly in the west.

The Middle Ages were not the stagnation of civilization.
China as a civilization also collapsed many times, rising again.
Troy burned at least six times and was rebuilt each time.

We all carry the strengths, strengths of the builders of Rome, Troy, Alexandria, Athens, the builders of the pyramids, the Colosseum, the Acropolis…

The results are brutal historical selection. Maybe in good time these self-preserving genes have made us inactive. But they are there.

We have more power in ourselves than we think.

Civilization does not perish, it always survives. Everything else is just a reminder of our strength.
And this will pass.

And then let’s go build again. Even better.
So don’t despair.”

Note: The last sentences under quotation marks are also taken from other person which is not Michael Stevens but my good friend, an economist and a writer: Branimir Perković. I am more than happy to often read positive thoughts around me as mine thoughts are always positive too.

Furthermore on fear topic, did you know that exposure therapy can help people overcome their fears!? Literally, it means confronting your fears in order to overcome them.

Well, the same principles can be used to create fears.

So, be careful what you read and what you watch.

I am not saying that you should go outside and confront the virus because even if you want to – you can’t and you are forbidden to (unless you want to confront the police officer and a fine or even a prison).

But in general, confronting fear is nothing but a good thing. To be frank, I’ve had numerous fears until I started defeating my fears and owning them before they completely started to own me.

Today, I even have a fearless woman T-shirt (lol).

To summarize, have some fears but also be fearless in the same time in order to take certain risks and chances that life and moments are offering you.

I hope my article was enough inspiring and useful to at least calm you down a bit in these weird times. I wish you lots of love, positive vibes and plenty of health.
